Across the Room

You feel it before you see it — the specific weight of being watched by someone who has decided you are the only thing in the room worth watching.

You look up. He does not look away. That is the whole game, and he is winning it, and the worst part is how much you want him to.

When he finally crosses the room to you, he does it slowly, unhurried, certain. "There you are," he says, as though you were ever going to be anywhere else.
