The Mirror Lies Kindly

They think the mirror tells the truth. It does not. It tells me what I can bear, which is a far more dangerous magic.

Tonight it shows me the girl in the tower, and for the first time in a hundred years it does not call her fairer. It calls her mine.

I break the glass. Not because it lied — because, this once, I am afraid it did not.
