The Terms of the Bargain

Mortals always assume a bargain is a trap. It is not. A bargain is the most honest thing I know how to offer, which is precisely why she should be afraid of the one I am about to make.

I could take her soul for the favour she is begging. Instead I ask for something crueler: the truth of what she wants, spoken aloud, in her own voice.

She hesitates on the threshold of her own desire. And I — who have never wanted anything I could not simply seize — find that I would wait a thousand years for her to say it.
