After

Sawyer

The world tells her to be loud, to be sharp, to be armored. My whole job, in this quiet room, is to convince her she is allowed to put all of that down.

Afterward is my favorite part. The blanket, the water, the way her breathing slows when I tell her she did so well. Aftercare is not the epilogue. It is the point.

"Good girl," I murmur into her hair, and I feel the last of the day’s armor finally, safely, fall away.
