The Call Log

I have listened to the recording forty times. Not for the case. For the sound of her voice staying steady while everything on her end fell apart.

Dispatchers are trained to keep you alive with nothing but words. She kept a stranger breathing for nine minutes on a night I can only describe as the worst of both our lives.

I am not supposed to know who was on the other end of that line. But I do. And tomorrow I am going to knock on her door and thank her, and I already know I am not going to want to leave.
