People say the loveliest things in front of a woman pouring tea, because they have decided she is furniture. I have solved three murders on the strength of what suspects said while I refilled their cups.
The trick is never to look surprised. A raised eyebrow ends confessions. A warm smile and a fresh pot keeps them coming.
Poirot the cat watched the whole conversation from the windowsill. Between the two of us, we had the killer named before the scones were cold.
