He asks for the favour like it costs him nothing. It costs him everything, and we both know it, and that is exactly why he cannot look at me while he says it.
I lock the office door. Not because anyone is coming — because he needs the sound of it, the small certain click that says there is no one here to perform for.
He is a man who has never once told the truth out loud. But his hands are honest, and tonight, in a locked room, that is the only confession either of us can afford.
